The 2007 Edition of Jazz Lives! in Syria Festival is a Great Success Wednesday, July 18. A great international line-up with stars from Switzerland, the U.S., Italy, the Netherlands, Armenia, Canada, Turkey, Finland, Germany, Lebanon, and, of course, Syria in an amazing 28 concerts in two cities (Damascus and Aleppo) with over 5000 fans attending the biggest events... This is, in short, the story of this year's Jazz Lives Festival in Syria, which tool place in Damascus from July 2 till July 7 and in Aleppo from July 3 till July 9 2007. Among the participating artists are: Amadis Dunkel, Franco Ambrosetti, Frank Carlberg, Oliver Friedli, Lena Shamaian, Kent Stettler, Houri Apartian, Manfred Leuchter, Ayse Tütümcü, Gerard Kleijn, Kinan Azmeh, and many more... A Children's Day was added for the first time this year, introducing about 150 children to Jazz music and to the instruments used in Jazz. The workshop ended with a surprise visit by the First Lady of Syria, Mrs. Asma al-Assad, who has contributed Immensely to the success of both the Jazz Lives in Syria Festival and the Children's Day with her patronage and support. Big Band Project in Syria Tuesday, November 24, A Big Band Workshop in cooperation with the Swiss Embassy in Damascus, Syria, is in planning for June/July 2005. Calvin Jones Dies Monday, October 18. On October 10th Calvin Jones, the founder and director the University of the District of Columbia's jazz studies program, dies aged 75. Hundreds of musicians from the East Coast and some from Europe, including Andrew White, Buck Hill, Keter Betts, Bruce Williams, and Bobby Felder, pay their last tribute to the great musician and educator in an impressive funeral ceremony on October 16th in Washington DC. Calvin Jones was a major influence in Amadis Dunkel's formation and his teacher since 1995. |
