For more info call 0041 76 317 0800. 9 and 10 July 2006 A small ensemble workshop, which focuses on improvisational concepts of the Jazz language, individual lessons, Indian singing and tabla classes, as well as writing and arranging classes is held at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus. Designed to leave a lasting impact on the Syrian Jazz scene, the workshop culminates in a small performance allowing the Syrian musicians to show off what they learned. 7 July 2006 A surprise visit by the President of the Syrian Republic Dr. Bashar al-Assad and the First Lady Asma al-Assad crowns the final concert of the Festival by the Syrian Swiss Jazz Orchestra in Aleppo as well as the overall success of this spectacular event. Read more... 2 July 2006 Amadis Dunkel, conducts the Syrian Swiss Jazz Orchestra for the grand opening of the second annual Jazz Lives in Syria 2006 International Jazzfestival. The Big Band event, which features a host of Syrian and international stars, is attended by over 4500 fans in the historical Citadel of Damascus. The repertoire is truely groundbraking. It includes manny traditional Arabic instruments, such as the Nai flute, the kanoun, the oud, as well as Arabic singing, rapping, and percussion. Read more... 20 - 25 July 2005 After one and a half months of intense workshop with Amadis Dunkel and a noumber of talened young Syrian musicians, a histirical event is taking place: The first and only true Jazz Big Band in the entire Arab world is born! Its first performance ever also forms the main attraction of the first annual Jazz Lives in Syria festival. About 3500 fans as well as Her Excellency Asma al-Assad, spouse of the President of Syria attend this event. Click here for more info. 15 June - 15 July 2005 Big Band workshop in Damaskus, Syria with Amadis Dunkel. In cooperation with the Swiss Embassy and the Goethe Institut in Damascus a ambitious and in many ways pioneering cross cultural project was born: Syrian musicians will have the opportunity to play in a Big Band rehearsed and directed by Amadis Dunkel. At the end of a three-week rehearsal period there will large scale concerts in Damaskus and Aleppo, as well as festival participation. Detailed information will be published on this website. The converstation covers the recent tour of the Amadis Dunkel Octet, the CD JL 301 Amadis Dunkel Octet & Sextet, and - naturally - the passing of Calvin Jones, Amadis' teacher and mentor since 1994. Musically, the tracks "Freddie Freeloader," "Snowflakes," and "Brazil" from JL 301 Amadis Dunkel Octet & Sextet hit the air waves. The CD is available through this website under "products". 10 October 2004 JazzLives! deeply regrets the untimely passing away of Calvin Jones, director of the University of the District of Columbia's Jazz Studies Program, teacher and mentor of Amadis Dunkel and many of his friends. Jones dies aged 75. Hundreds of musicians from the East Coast and some from Europe, including Andrew White, Buck Hill, Chris Vadala, and Bruce Williams, joined family and friends in paying their last tribute to the great musician and legendary educator in an impressive funeral ceremony on October 16th in Washington DC.. Read more... 14 October 2004 The Amadis Dunkel Octet returns from a very successful tour to the Middle East. Highlights were the first ever concert on the open air stage at the new King Hussein Park in Amman in front of an illustrious audience including the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor of the city, consular staff, and other VIP; the two performances at the "Rumors" night club, Sheraton Hotel in Damascus; the workshops at the Goethe Institute, also in Damascus; or the open air gig at the amazingly scenic "Hurricane Pool Bar" at the Movenpick Hotel in Beirut. The Octet's numerous appearances were acclaimed by audiences and the media. The Jordan Times, the Syrian Times, and The Daily Star (Lebanon) were very impressed: LebJAZZ.net said it experienced the amazing performance by the Amadis Dunkel Octet in the Marathon Village, Martyr Square on Saturday 9th October. We warmly recommend you this dynamic, young band.
